WHY THE NEED FOR A NEW FIRE STATION?

As our town continues to grow, we too are planning to expand and enhance our ability to serve you better and more efficiently. Currently the Fire Department, along with the town is actively planning for the location and construction of a new fire department headquarters building.

We are attempting to locate this building in the RT 7/ Washington Highway area of town. As this area continues to grow rapidly, the need for emergency services to businesses and residents is vital for safety reasons. Our ability to respond in a timely manor to this area of town is extremely important to us and to those who rely on our services.

The expansion of Bryant University, Fidelity Investments, as well as increase traffic, hotel construction, residential development, the busy interstate 295 and the ever increasing air traffic at North Central Airport, have continued to impact both Fire Department emergency operations and administrative services.

Our current facilities while vital to the operation of the fire department, don’t meet the needs of this growing area of town in the normal industry required time frame. This means longer emergency response times to this area. As Smithfield continues to grow in business and industry, our administrative demands increase as well. Building construction provides important tax base for our community.

The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for conducting building construction plan review and fire code compliance, for all new building projects. This assures that all new buildings will become safe working environments and safe places for customers to visit.

Our current fire headquarters lacks the necessary square footage to properly review plans, and to administrate our emergency operations.

Since this growth places strong demands on the fire department, the time has come to expand to this area of town.
